What is “Deep Health?”

Precision Nutrition’s “Deep Health” model

Welcome to the first post of my blog! Today we are focusing on the Deep Health coaching method, a method I’ve been using with my clients and in my personal life for 15 years. The Deep Health method has 6 branches, and before we dive into each branch individually, first we must define what “deep health” is, according to its origin from the Precision Nutrition literature. “Deep health,” is:

Deep Health doesn’t come from a pill or an operation.

Deep Health comes from a balanced diet of fresh, whole foods. It comes from sufficient exercise combined with genuine rest. It comes from fresh air and clean water. It comes from real human connection and sincere emotional expression.

And it comes from living with purpose and joy, and using your life as an expression of these things.”

There are 6 dimensions to the Deep Health coaching model:

  • Physical

  • Emotional

  • Mental

  • Environmental

  • Existential (I would also add "Spiritual” under this dimension)

  • Relational

True health is when you have explored each of these branches individually and found a balance in each. Life will always throw us curveballs, and our priorities are constantly adjusting based on the day, hour, moment, etc. But our values and core beliefs about how we operate at our highest level, how we feel we are living our best life or living out our highest potential, while taking care of ourselves inside and out, so that we can then live in our purpose, hopefully to live in alignment with our true selves as well as to serve the greater good in humanity or the planet.

Each branch of deep health takes a considerable amount of time to explore, so it’s important to be patient with yourself on this journey of self discovery. There will be many trials and errors, however over time and with reflection, it is possible to live in harmony with yourself, your mind, your body, your home, your work, the people around you, and your soul. This is achieving true deep health.
